SKEWED AND TATTOOED

Drawing together some of the freshest and unique talent in and around the Chattanooga area, Skewed Vision 2 presented art that was fun, imaginative and slightly dangerous.
By Eric Durchholz
Not that the attendees looked particularly put off by some of the extreme imagery on display. In fact, some of the revelers could have been displays themselves. Several attendees sported amazing work from Evermore Galleries owners Shane Hartline and La La in effect making the event more of a living, breathing celebration of extreme art and pop-culture remixing.

This wasn't an ordinary art show in the least. Some of the work on display contained images of bare-breasted chicks, sculptures of skeletons and skulls, monsters on canvas and women in peril. Far from being threatening, the artwork at Evermore celebrated extreme fantasies and ideas. It dared to show us what's lurking beneath (or on) our skin.

Marcus receives a gift from La La and Shane Hartline
Marcus Evans was chosen by Skewed Vision attendees as their favorite artist. It was hard to ignore Evans' huge paintings that threatened to leap off the bright blue walls. In person, Marcus is quite unlike his artwork. He's affable and engaging with a terribly wicked sense of humor. He creates his work in many different mediums from simple sketches reborn via Photoshop to large-scale visions in acrylic.

The work of Brian Papa of Papa Studios in Atlanta was playfully dangerous. From a 3-D wall scupture of a flaming 8-ball (pictured above) to pinstriping (normally seen on pimped-out rides) framed and displayed like the art that it is. Brian also makes signs and creates custom lettering for vehicles in the Atlanta area.

Other work on display came from Tommy Payne and the tortured images of life ala his namesake. The slightly disturbing (in a good way) photography of Ken McCurry and sculptures from Shane and La La.

If you missed the show, the exhibit will run at Evermore until the end of March and ChattanoogaArt.com will present more in-depth coverage of each of the artists at Skewed Vision 2 as the month goes on.

Thanks for the article. I'm pissed that I missed the show. But having seen Marcus' work at the previous Skewed Vision, and at the Uncanny shows, I'd vote for him as my fave also (no disrespect to the other amazing artists--I love their work as well).
